THANKS TO KRENN
This thing wouldn't be here if not for Krenn's help. We are indebted to him! Great work in not only setting this up, but also making it match the look and feel of the main website.

Language versions
Hi, language versions of the wiki (currently Italian and Spanish) are not working like it is suposed.
Currently, for the spanish versión we have to put first "ES:" (i.e. ES:Churchill VII). Still, this does not work properly as the engine you are using does NOT recognices this as diferente languages and makes it dificult to search for non-english language users.
In the Wikipedia they must use other system, as it is very easy to ad to an article an indication than you can find it in other languages (i.e.: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WWIIOL for english and http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battleground_Europe for spanish) with the mere adition of [[es:Battleground Europe]] [[sv:World War II Online]] at the end of the article.
In sum: I think we could redo the NON english languages just making a new directory for each NON english language (i.e.: /spanish/ or /italian/ ) so we do not have to use the weird ES: or IT system, wich is doing more bad than good.
It will take a few minutes to the administrator and just some more for Cad and me to move all the spanish articles and will ease the job of the NON english article makers.

Hi all. I am here to do translation to Finnish, but apparently the language stuff is in change phase?
So, when it is sorted out could someone give some tips on how to start. Like is it possible to just copy everything English and then I start translating them to Finnish. Not very familiar with the wiki stuff but I would like to help with this. Thanks.

Krenn has been testing how to do this now. You can see a language bar on the bottom of pages with a translation: take a look at the Main Page and APHE and AP pages. It involves setting the page up with /<two letter language code> after the name, such as APHE/es. I tried a quick experiment but I haven't done it right. (As you can probably imagine, it is crazy busy here right now). When I fully understand how to do this, I'll mention it here and write a page describing how. Hopefully that will be today/tonight.

Anything new on how should translations be made?
--Snellman 00:41, 17 January 2007 (CST)
- Just figured out how to do this for now: Battleground_Europe_Wiki:Language_policy
- Bloo 12:17, 17 January 2007 (CST)
- Sweet, I'll start translating this week hopefully.
- Snellman 02:45, 23 January 2007 (CST)
- Ok, I tried setting up Main_Page/fi but I didn't understand how the language bar on the bottom should work? Also, should I do the Categories too with /fi (for example Category:Glossary/fi)on the end or just the actual pages?
- --Snellman 03:28, 23 January 2007 (CST)
- To get the Finnish flag to show on the main page language bar, after creating Main Page/fi, you have to remove the Languages template line in curly braces from the Main Page, save the Main Page, edit the Main Page again, then put the Language template back in (near the very bottom), then save it.
- For Categories, I think that is up to you. Might be nice for visitors to be able to see which pages in a category are available in their language. Bloo 11:36, 23 January 2007 (CST)
- Ok, my bad with the language bar, tried it on wrong page. Should it be removed on translated pages since it doesn't appear to work to both ways? I mean the Main Page/fi doesn't show flags to link back to english and spanish main pages. Snellman 12:33, 23 January 2007 (CST)
- That seems to work ok. I removed if from the Main Page/fi and that does not appear to have broken anything. Bloo 11:50, 24 January 2007 (CST)
- Ok. So it isn't supposed to work so Finnish translated pages like Main Page/fi would show the language bar on bottom with Languages: Finnish +en +es +it and so on with flags? Anyhow I'm now working on the translations every now and then when time, hope they help for the Finnish noobs that don't know English so well :) --Snellman 13:00, 24 January 2007 (CST)
- Yes. But we have to upgrade the server hardware and the OS and the mediawiki version and that's going to take a while. Bloo 16:32, 24 January 2007 (CST)
- The language bar should be on all the pages that are available in multiple languages - it just won't work right on the non-English pages, until we get the upgrades mentioned on the Language Policy page implemented. --Krenn 16:33, 24 January 2007 (CST)
- Ok, if you do not mind, I'm halting translation into spanish until the upgrade, to avoid unnecesary work, as we should have to rename all the spanish articles. As we currently have a spanish wikipedia (http://www.1spanishcompany.co.uk/wiki/index.php?title=Portada), we've that base covered. Of course, the best thing is to have an Official Spanish BE wiki, so as soon as the upgrade is done, we'll start to work on the spanish version. Using the formed linked wiki, it should be go very fast (and the info is correct as most content of the 1SCpedia is taken directly from CRS sources if possible).
--Marneus 08:57, 16 February 2007 (CST)
- I do not know when of even if, there will be a wiki server upgrade. It may be easier to just add links to the 1SC wiki on appropriate pages. Bloo
I've been recently working in the Spanish translation of the wwiionline Wiki (I don't think linking to another wikipedia is a good idea) and the language bar at the bottom of the original page (in english) is working fine for me, linking them to their Spanish version. Spanish flag followed by "es" appears in all of them.
An example: Billing is linked to Billing/es, and "Billing/es" is redirected to Facturación, which is the Spanish translation of the word Billing (Spanish users may not know what Billing means). As you can check clicking on them everything is working fine.
About the Categories: Spanish translated pages are grouped under their corresponding Category, but this time the name of the Category is translated into Spanish. An example: the Spanish page for Billing (Facturación) is under the Category Ayuda del juego, which is the translation of GameHelp Category (again, Spanish users may not know what GameHelp means). This Category (Ayuda del juego) is only available from Spanish translated pages, so it doesn't interfere with the pages in other languages.
If you find this explanation a little messy, please feel free to navigate thru the links provided above to see exactly what I mean.

Very Glad to read that! Well, then it is time to start the move of articles. I'll start with vehicles and will follow up on manuals.
--Marneus 04:48, 5 May 2007 (CDT)
Anal OCD
One of the things already lacking here is consistency. For example, the FW 190 page calls the aircraft a "Fw.190A-4" in the header, but a "Fw190" or "Fw190A" in the body.
One of things we did with TechPubs early on was find out the correct terminology and establish a style sheet that all writers would stick to. Perhaps this wiki needs one as well....
I'm not saying that the following guide should be the one for this project, but having a guide like it is a good idea. Note that the use of dashes and spaces in the equipment names is as close to official as we could get. It is "FW 190A-4", not "Fw190A-4".
Agree, it was also the first thing we did in the spanish wwiiol wiki: to make a style sheet so all vehicles followed the very same designation (i.e. manufacturer_model_variant: Curtiss H81, Supermarine Spitfire Vb, etc...). Sometimes it was adapted to each country (i.e. PzKpfw VI E, Sherman M4A3E8, Churchill VII, Somua S35, etc...)

Created Techpubs page
Webs, I created a Techpubs page and put your style guide in a page of it's own, as well as put some quick wiki formatting on it. Techpubs style. Unforunately, Mediawiki doesn't let you have capital letters anywhere but the first character.
As you point out, consistency is lacking. On the wiki, this is mostly because the bulk of what is here is material I have cut and paste from various versions of documentation here. 'Course, the root problem is that it was never consistent internally. We have recently been working on this to revise some vehicle names as they are presented in the UI (though the goals in the UI are a bit different than in documentation - the name has to be easily understandable to a newb. For instance, I'm in favor of using "Panzer III F", rather than "PzKwf. III Ausf. F." This is especially confusing with the French AT guns and where a vehicle has a common nickname (e.g., "Cruiser Mk. VI" vs. "A13").
Thanks Bloo
Thanks for the move and reformat.
I added my first bit of TP info in an update of the Stielhandgranate 24. I didn't change the weapon stats, but they are ever so slightly off from what TP came up with. I can't vouch for either stats, so I'll leave that modification to more knowledgable grognards.
on French designations
I eventually understood that historical French official designations are a little bit irrelevant. They were mentioned in some official documents, but rarely used in full really, and certainly not in the field. The 1940 grunt was happy with calling his AT gun a canon de 25, his AA gun a mitrailleuse de 25, and his LMG a FM! Ideally, the n00bs shouldn't have anything more complicated to learn unless they really want to go into historical details.
FWIW, the official policy on the Wikipedia is to use "the most common name in English". The (stub yet) pages on the so-called ingame SA mle 34 and CA mle 38 (very unsual designations by themselves, as French weapons are primarily designated by their calibre) are respectively titled in Wikipedia 25 mm Hotchkiss anti-tank gun and 25 mm Hotchkiss anti-aircraft gun. The ingame SA mle 37 will be 47 mm APX anti-tank gun as soon I quit being lazy and actually start writing it.
Upload broken?
Tried to upload pics today, Friday, April, 2007,and I got a message saying "The upload directory (/home/sites/9287124243/www/web/images) is not writable by the webserver." When will it be back up? Danvm 12:37, 6 April 2007 (CDT)
-K, it's fixed. Thanks! Danvm 18:32, 11 April 2007 (CDT)
Working on the Tech guide
I'm hopefully getting off my butt and re-make the entire game settings screen. I did somewhat fill out the Game performance page with good stuff I already knew off the top of my head. My wife is following along while shes at work to fix my horrible grammer. :) Hopefully at one point I'll include a Nvidia control panel or just provide a wwiionline performance profile for the forceware drivers.
Footnotes and Citations
I can't seem to get footnotes or citations to work. Can anyone help? Thanks Danvm 11:29, 10 October 2007 (CDT)
Delete policy
How can a page be deleted? The LAND page can go. Danvm 11:59, 10 October 2007 (CDT)
- I believe that standard users cannot delete, but administrators can. To request deletion, put a reason why in the Discussion tab for the document, and then apply the Delete template to the main document with {{Delete}}. An admin should review every week or so and purge deleted docs if they agree. --Krenn 15:42, 3 January 2008 (CST)
Templates
Is there any chance of getting templates for Template:See also working so that we can link to more detailed pages if there's no obvious text to hyperlink or if it makes sense to just redirect to a detailed description? Wikipedia templates --User:Cavern 11:28, 19 March 2009 (EST)
- Nevermind, I figured it out. Actually reading the page I linked helped! --User:Cavern
Linking From Headings
It is really jarring and annoying (to me) to come across article headings that are also links (i.e. === Foo === ) since these make the page difficult to read IMHO. I've been replacing them with
- See Also: Foo or
- Main article: Foo links instead. I realized that I never actually checked that it wasn't part of a coding standard or anything, so I'm wondering if I should continue? I strongly believe that it helps readability of articles, but I'm open to discussion. --User:Cavern 10:17, 20 March 2009 (EST)
Maybe we should make a Article Style Guide regarding article formatting (in the spirit of Techpubs style and Wikipedia)? Or should we use the techpubs page for this? --User:Cavern 10:19, 20 March 2009 (EST)
- Sorry I didn't see this sooner. Can you give me an example of a page you don't like that does this and how you would change it? I understand it might annoy you but it seems rather convenient to me in some contexts. Bloo
New Main Page
Boomking, our support intern, did most of the redesign here. I think it's a lot better. We are shifting the appearance of the wiki main page to be more 'reference' like, and less 'newsy', since we have the new website for that.
If you've written a new wiki article that you think would be good to mention on the main website, just let me know! Bloo
